Wade Downey has 19 years of tax consulting experience serving clients in the state and local tax area, providing sales and use tax recovery services, audit representation and tax planning. Wade is responsible for managing Downey, Smith & Fier’s healthcare practice and supports the technical aspects of the firm’s largest recovery projects. Wade has served as client lead of the University of California system for the past 10 years, including the five UC medical centers.
Wade began his career with the State Board of Equalization as a field auditor in the Torrance District Office and was a Senior Tax Manager in Deloitte & Touche’s Los Angeles Multistate Tax Services Group. While with Deloitte, Wade led the recovery service team for the University of California System as well as other major public education groups. Wade has extensive experience with the application of sampling theories in sales & use tax audits and credit & refunds studies—both statistical and non-statistical.
Wade has worked with the state of California and Washington to develop their advanced computer assisted auditing programs; many of his early contributions helped refine these state’s existing audit programs.
Wade is a Certified Public Accountant with a Masters of Taxation from the University of Southern California. He graduated with honors—Magna Cum Laude—from California State University, Dominguez Hills, with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
