Bernie joined Downey, Smith & Fier in 2015. Prior to joining the firm, Bernie spent 13 years as an auditor with the California State Franchise Tax Board (FTB) where he achieved the designation of Program Specialist. During his time with the FTB, Bernie specialized in tax credits, primarily the Enterprise Zone Tax Credit and the Research and Development Tax Credit (R&D). His last seven years involved reviewing and approving credits for California’s largest taxpayers and corporations, encompassing a variety of industries. Bernie’s FTB experience brings a unique perspective to the credits and incentives area offering DSF clients a competitive edge. He has extensive contacts and relationships within the FTB’s Audit, Protest, Appeals and Legal Departments.
Bernie’s main focus is on the following California practice areas; Research and Development Tax Credit, California Competes Tax Credit, and Employment Training Panel funding. Bernie’s agency knowledge, technical know-how and hands-on experience with California’s complex tax system complement DSF’s services to maximize the benefit from these programs.
Bernie received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the California State University of Long Beach in 2002.
